Overview We are starting a project that aims to understand the inter-domain routing policies used in the Internet. The ultimate goal is to use this understanding to improve the efficiency, robustness and expressiveness of routing protocols. Our approach is two-fold: Active measurements to observe paths taken in practice. These measurements would help us understand the impact of inter-domain policies on the paths taken in the network. Studying the BGP config files. A survey of real world configs would help us understand the class of policies used in the Internet.
